Royal Caribbean to MSC Status Match
If you've built up years of Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Society status, MSC Cruises will look at it. MSC's Voyagers Club Status Match Program accepts status from competing cruise lines and gives you a comparable MSC tier without a sailing requirement. For a Royal Caribbean loyalist curious about MSC's newer ships, or about Florida short cruises that cost less than Royal's, this is the cheapest way to try MSC without starting from the bottom.
There are two catches. You only get one MSC match, ever. And the Crown & Anchor tier you'd expect to map to MSC's top matchable tier often doesn't.
How MSC's match works (the parts that apply to everyone)
From MSC's US status match FAQ and terms:
- Free, and requested directly from MSC through its status match form.
- Age 18+ only.
- Once per person. MSC says multiple submissions won't be accepted.
- Proof required: a screenshot or scan showing your name, the program and your current tier.
- Turnaround: approval email with your Voyagers Club number and tier, usually within 72 hours.
- Highest result: Diamond. Blue Diamond can only be earned by sailing.
- After the match: the normal Voyagers Club terms apply, including the inactivity rule (see below).
Crown & Anchor tiers, briefly
Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society awards cruise points per night, with extra points for suites and solo sailors. The tiers are Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club. Diamond starts at 80 points, Diamond Plus at 175 and Pinnacle at 700. For an MSC match, what counts is the tier your account shows right now, not the points behind it.
What Royal Caribbean tiers are likely to match to
MSC's own published conversion table online is dated July 27, 2021, and MSC says it matches "as closely as possible" to your current benefits. Recent third-party reports, which are consistent with each other but not official, put the mapping roughly here:
| Crown & Anchor tier | Reported MSC match |
|---|---|
| Gold | Classic |
| Platinum | Silver |
| Emerald | Gold |
| Diamond | Gold |
| Diamond Plus | Gold (some readings of MSC's 2021 table show Diamond) |
| Pinnacle Club | Diamond |
The important row is Diamond Plus. Several current guides report Diamond Plus matching to MSC Gold, while one reading of MSC's 2021 table places it at Diamond. We couldn't resolve this from an official current source. If you're a Diamond Plus member hoping for MSC Diamond, it's an open question, and you only get one try.
Pinnacle Club members are consistently reported to match to MSC Diamond.
Is a Royal Caribbean Diamond → MSC Gold match worth it?
Even at Gold, an MSC match has value:
- The 5% Voyagers Club booking discount applies from Classic up.
- Early-booking extras: an extra 5% for bookings more than 9 months out, and for Silver and above, double points and $50 onboard credit per member on bookings more than 12 months out.
- Gold-level onboard perks from MSC's benefits chart, including laundry and minibar discounts available from Silver up.
But it uses up your lifetime match. If there's a realistic chance you'll hold a status that maps to MSC Diamond in the next year or two, either Pinnacle Club with Royal or a qualifying hotel tier like Hilton Diamond, it can pay to wait. See Using Hotel Status for an MSC Status Match.
Step by step
- Screenshot your Crown & Anchor tier in the Royal Caribbean app or website. Make sure your full name and tier are clearly visible. A card photo also works if it's current.
- Create an MSC Voyagers Club account if you don't have one, using the same name as on your Royal Caribbean account and passport.
- Submit MSC's status match form with your proof attached.
- Wait for the approval email (MSC says within 72 hours). It includes your Voyagers Club number and matched tier.
- Add the Voyagers Club number to any MSC booking, including existing ones, and check that the member discount and tier appear.
- Check your eTicket before sailing to make sure the right tier shows.
What doesn't carry over
- Points. A match gives you a tier, not a points balance from Royal Caribbean. Check what point balance your matched account shows. It affects how far you are from Blue Diamond.
- Royal Caribbean-specific perks. MSC has its own benefits. Royal's Diamond lounge, drink vouchers and similar perks don't have direct equivalents, and MSC Gold doesn't include free drinks.
- Royal Caribbean status in return. The match only goes one way. Royal Caribbean doesn't publicly match MSC status. Its published "shared status" program covers its own sister brands, Celebrity and Silversea, not MSC.
Keeping the MSC tier
MSC's general conditions dated November 7, 2024 say Voyagers Club membership, and every point in it, expires if you go more than 60 months (five years) without a cruise, counted from your last disembarkation, or from enrollment if you've never sailed. Some older MSC documents still online, including MSC's US status match FAQ, give 36 months. Since a matched tier can't be matched again, the safest approach is to take an MSC cruise within three years of matching.
There's no official "lifetime" tier in MSC's terms. A matched Gold or Diamond lasts as long as the account stays active.
Common mistakes
- Matching with expired Crown & Anchor status. MSC wants current status. If your Royal tier recently dropped, use what your account shows today.
- Name mismatches between your Royal Caribbean and MSC accounts.
- Expecting Diamond from Royal Diamond. It's reported to land at MSC Gold.
- Using the match years before your first MSC cruise. The inactivity clock starts at enrollment, so you could lose the matched tier before you ever use it.
- Submitting a second request after a disappointing result. MSC won't process it.
Royal Caribbean vs. MSC: what changes when you switch
Royal Caribbean regulars who try MSC often notice the same differences. Knowing them helps you decide whether a matched tier is worth using.
Points philosophy. Crown & Anchor counts cruise nights, with bonuses for suites. MSC counts cruises by experience and length band, plus points for prepaid packages. A Royal loyalist who takes long cruises earns relatively fewer MSC points per night. Someone who takes 5-night and 10-night cruises does well.
Where perks live. Royal Caribbean's mid and upper tiers are known for lounge access and onboard recognition. MSC Gold and Diamond focus more on priority (embarkation, guest services, upgrade priority) and booking-side value (the 5% member discount and early-booking extras).
Product tiers. MSC sells "experiences" (Bella, Fantastica, Aurea) and the Yacht Club. Royal Caribbean sells cabin categories and suites. Your Voyagers Club tier sits on top of whichever experience you book.
Homeports. Both lines sail heavily from Miami, Port Canaveral and Galveston, and MSC also sails from New York. If you live near one of these ports, a short MSC cruise is an easy way to try the matched tier and reset MSC's activity clock in the same trip.
A decision guide for each Crown & Anchor tier
- Gold or Platinum: a match will land low (reported Classic or Silver). Unless you hold a better hotel status, it's usually worth matching now if you have an MSC cruise booked. Getting the 5% member discount early is worth more than holding out for a slightly better tier later.
- Emerald or Diamond: reported to land at Gold. If you hold, or could soon hold, Hilton Diamond (for example through the Aspire card) or Hyatt Globalist, use that instead. Both are widely reported to reach MSC Diamond.
- Diamond Plus: uncertain between Gold and Diamond. If you have a hotel status reported to reach Diamond, use that to remove the uncertainty.
- Pinnacle Club: submit it. It's consistently reported to reach Diamond, the ceiling.
FAQ
Can my spouse match too? Yes, separately. MSC's match is per person. Each traveler submits their own Crown & Anchor status.
Will MSC see my Royal Caribbean cruise history? No. MSC matches based on the tier you submit, not your sailing history.
Does my Royal Caribbean tier have to stay active after I match? No. Once MSC grants the tier, it follows MSC's rules, including the inactivity rule.
Confirmed vs. uncertain
Confirmed (MSC sources): free, once-per-person match; 18+; proof requirements; roughly 72-hour turnaround; Diamond as the highest matchable tier; the 5% member discount and early-booking extras; the 60-month inactivity rule in the November 2024 conditions.
Uncertain: the exact Crown & Anchor-to-MSC mapping, especially Diamond Plus, since MSC's online table is dated 2021; whether MSC's 36-month wording in older documents still applies anywhere.
