How to Stack Status Matches
"Stacking" means using one real status to qualify for another, then using that to qualify for a third, until a single starting status has turned into elite treatment across hotels, cruises and rental cars. It works because many programs accept status from other industries. MSC accepts hotel status. National accepts airline and hotel status. SIXT accepts airline and hotel programs.
Done carefully, stacking is legitimate and free. Done carelessly, it wastes one-time matches and can cost you your accounts. This guide covers how to build a stack and the rules that keep it honest.
The three rules of honest stacking
- Every link has to be real. Each match needs current status, in your name, shown by the program's own statement, card or account screen. You can't submit status you don't actually hold, someone else's status, or edited images.
- Order matters. Some matches are one-time (MSC, Hilton) or once every five years (Hertz). Use them when your best source is in hand, not before.
- Status you've matched into is status you hold. Once a program grants you a tier, it's generally fine to show it to another program. Programs decide what they'll accept.
The usual starting points
Most US stacks start from one of these, because they're reliable and renewable:
- A credit card that grants status:
- Hilton Honors Aspire: Hilton Diamond
- Capital One Venture X: Hertz President's Circle
- Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex: Hertz President's Circle
- Amex Platinum: Hilton Gold, Marriott Gold, and premium rental status with enrollment
- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant: Marriott Platinum
- Delta Medallion status: Hertz President's Circle (Diamond/Platinum) or Five Star (Gold/Silver)
- Military programs: Wyndham Gold, Caesars Platinum (SALUTE), Choice Gold Elite
- Status earned through actual travel
Stack 1: hotel to cruise (the MSC stack)
Goal: MSC Voyagers Club Diamond, the highest tier available through a match.
- Get Hilton Diamond. The Aspire card is the most direct way. Alternatively, Hilton's own match, if you're Base or Silver, gives a 90-day Gold trial that becomes Diamond after 12 nights.
- Wait until Diamond shows in your Hilton account.
- Submit Hilton Diamond to MSC's status match. Hilton Diamond is widely reported to match to MSC Diamond.
- Sail MSC within the activity window: 60 months under MSC's November 2024 conditions, 36 under older wording.
Why the order matters: MSC allows one match per person. If you submit Royal Caribbean Diamond or Marriott Platinum first, which are reported to match only to MSC Gold, you can't redo it with Hilton Diamond later.
Alternative sources reported to reach MSC Diamond: Hyatt Globalist, Royal Caribbean Pinnacle, NCL Ambassador, Celebrity Zenith.
Stack 2: rental car "grand slam"
Goal: top or near-top status at Hertz, National, SIXT and Avis.
- Start with Hertz President's Circle from Venture X, Delta Reserve Amex, or Delta Diamond/Platinum Medallion. Using one of these keeps Hertz's own five-year match available for later.
- Match to National. National accepts 40+ rental, airline and hotel programs. Submit your best one (Hertz President's Circle, Delta Medallion, or a hotel tier) with name, tier and expiration date visible.
- Match to SIXT. SIXT names Hertz and others among its sources, and says approved status is active immediately.
- Ask Avis. Third-party trackers report Hertz President's Circle and Sixt Platinum as sources for President's Club. We couldn't confirm a current official Avis page, so check with Avis directly.
Timing: apply to National early in the calendar year. Its matched status runs through February 28 of the second calendar year.
Stack 3: hotel to hotel
Hotel-to-hotel stacking is limited, because most chains give trials, not equivalents:
- Hilton gives every eligible matcher the same 90-day Gold trial. Your earned tier depends on nights (6 for Gold, 12 for Diamond), not on your source tier.
- Hyatt doesn't run a standard public match. Targeted challenges and case-by-case requests are the exceptions.
- Marriott runs matches and challenges from time to time. Check current offers.
Practical approach: use your strongest hotel status (often card-based) as the source for one hotel challenge at a time, when you have the stays to complete it.
Stack 4: casino to cruise (advanced and discretionary)
Some casino tiers carry cruise benefits, and land casinos often match competitors' cards in person. A legitimate casino stack starts with a real card: one you earned, or Caesars Platinum through the military SALUTE program. Matches depend on hosts, expect some play, and change often. See Casino Status Matches and Cruises.
Mapping your stack before you start
Before submitting anything, write it out:
| Step | Program | Source you'll submit | Expected result | One-time? | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aspire card | — | Hilton Diamond | — | While card held |
| 2 | MSC | Hilton Diamond | MSC Diamond (reported) | Yes, lifetime | Until 60 months inactive |
| 3 | National | Hilton Diamond or rental status | Executive or Executive Elite | Per terms | Feb 28, 2nd year |
| 4 | SIXT | Hertz/other rental status | Gold or Platinum | Per terms | Per terms |
Mark every one-time match and put it last among the steps that depend on your best source status.
What breaks a stack
- Losing the source status. If you cancel the Aspire card, Hilton Diamond goes. Statuses you've already matched into usually stay, but you can't use Hilton Diamond again as a source.
- Inactivity. MSC ends membership after its inactivity window. Rental programs downgrade you if you don't requalify by the end of the matched period.
- Name mismatches. Use the same legal name across every account.
- Program changes. Hilton's 2026 overhaul and MSC's 2024 refresh both changed things matchers relied on.
The line not to cross
Stacking uses programs' published rules as intended. It's not:
- Submitting status you don't hold, or that belongs to someone else.
- Editing screenshots or statements.
- Getting around a program's stated limits, such as a second MSC match when MSC allows one per person.
- Handing your loyalty login to a third party.
Programs can remove tiers, cancel points and close accounts for misuse, and their terms generally allow it. A legitimate stack never needs any of these.
A sample 90-day stacking plan
This is an example sequence for a US traveler who holds nothing but plans a year of mixed travel. Each step depends on the one before.
Weeks 1–4 - Apply for one status-granting card that fits your spending, such as Aspire for Hilton Diamond or Venture X for Hertz President's Circle. - Wait until the tier shows in the program account.
Weeks 4–6 - With Hilton Diamond: submit to MSC if you have a cruise in mind within the activity window. - With rental status: submit to National, ideally early in the calendar year.
Weeks 6–8 - Submit to SIXT with your rental status. - Contact Avis about its current match process, if you rent with Avis.
Weeks 8–12 - Check every account shows the matched tier. - Add every member number to your existing reservations. - Write down every expiry date and requalification requirement.
Keeping track
Keep a short list:
| Program | Tier | Source used | Date matched | Expires / requalify by | One-time? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton | Diamond | Aspire card | — | While card held | — |
| MSC | Diamond | Hilton Diamond | Feb 2026 | Sail by 2029 (safe) | Yes |
| National | Exec. Elite | Hilton Diamond | Feb 2026 | Feb 28 (2nd yr) | — |
FAQ
Is stacking against the rules? Using real status you hold to request matches that programs publicly offer is how matching is meant to work. Programs still decide whether to accept a given source.
Do I need to disclose that my source status came from a match? Programs ask for proof of your current tier. Answer any questions honestly.
Can I stack the same source into many programs at once? Yes, if each program accepts it. Do the one-time matches carefully, and when your best source is in hand.
Confirmed vs. uncertain
Confirmed (official pages): MSC accepts hotel status and allows one match per person; Hilton's match structure and eligibility; Hertz's sources, five-year rule and validity; Delta and Venture X Hertz benefits; National's accepted programs and validity; SIXT's sources and immediate activation.
Reported: specific MSC tier mappings from hotel and cruise sources; Avis's current match process; casino match terms.
